To date, 11 states have legalized recreational cannabis, 33 states have legalized medical cannabis, and it’s a safe bet that more are on the way in both categories. There is the smokable form, and there are edibles. Digital printing processes allow the document lifecycle to mirror the product lifecycle bell curve. For example, smaller volumes of marketing collateral may be required during product introduction, higher volumes during the growth and maturity stages, and smaller volumes again as product sales moderate. Book publishers can choose a short run for a promotional tour, higher volumes for the book release, and “books on demand” to avoid back order and out of stock situations.
Because quality no longer drives the workflow when making the choice to use digital printing processes instead of offset, the determining factors are more likely to be run length and processing costs. Determining those can be challenging to determine.

“Print is a major part of insurance marketing,” said Romano, “representing a spend of $7.0 billion in 2006. On an annual basis, insurance companies mail something to almost every U.S. citizen over the age of 18.”
Romano points out that the insurance market in the U.S. is forecast to grow 11 percent to $146.5 billion in 2008. He adds, “There are two levels of marketing and advertising budget. On the corporate level there is national and branding promotion. This pales next to the money spent by individual marketing departments. Marketing managers are responsible for new and existing business. A new program, like nursing home insurance, might have a budget of 30 percent of anticipated business; while, an existing program might have a budget of 2 percent of last years? revenue.” The insurance industry overall spends an average of 13.8 percent of total revenue on marketing budgets.

“Ad agencies influence over $102 billion in print buying in the U.S.,” said Romano. “Eighty percent of creative agencies are involved in print buying decisions and almost all of them play either a primary role or collaborative role in campaign development and direction.” According to Romano, a study by the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Printing Industry Center found that creative agencies play a critical role in the printing industry eco-system.
